The island fort, which has remained known by the Turkish name Bourtzi – i.e., ‘fort in the sea’ – is a trademark and tourist attraction of the city of Nafplio. Since its construction in the 15th century by the Venetians, the fort has ‘experienced’ wars and revolutions, functioned as a prison for heroes and a refuge for politicians, as a luxury hotel to accommodate famous visitors to the city, and also as a residence for the city’s executioners. Using digital photogrammetry, the 3D representation of the fort's exterior offers online visitors the possibility of a virtual tour of its premises, for the first time since its restoration and the opening of its gates to the public in August 2023.
